1. A Wealth of Specializations
One of the best benefits that pursuing a career in civil engineering offers is the ability to pursue a niche that interests you while still building a viable and successful career. From geotechnical specializations to transportation specializations, there is truly something in the industry to interest just about anyone. And there are so many steps in which civil engineers are vital to the construction and design processes that you’ll never get bored – there are plenty of phases where you can offer your input and expertise.
2. Job Stability
Civil engineering is necessary to both creating and sustaining a practical infrastructure within which society functions. As a civil engineer, you’ll work to design, plan, and oversee the construction and maintenance of things like buildings, airports, bridges, irrigation projects, sewage systems, water supply systems, tunnels, and roads, among many other things. As you can see, civil engineers are a major part of the team that ensures cities and towns function well. If you have a properly functioning sewage system and clean water, you can thank a civil engineer at least in part for their work on designing the area in which you live.
And, of course, the importance of these processes ensure that civil engineers will have viable careers for the foreseeable future.
3. Financial Stability
Because civil engineering is such a vital aspect of city planning and overall construction, skilled and experienced engineers are often paid well. That means that you can expect to earn a solid annual salary of, according to the BLS, around $85,000. That’s the median, of course, and you could find yourself earning a bit more or a bit less depending upon the market in which you work as well as the skills and expertise you bring to the table. Overall, it’s a great profession to pursue if you’re hoping for a stable career that offers a comfortable income.
